Lifting-Lug Motor Housings

Integrated lifting points for safe handling, installation, and maintenance access

Jiangsu Yufeng Electric Co., Ltd. manufactures motor housings with integrally formed or welded lifting lugs, designed to facilitate safe rigging during assembly, transport, and on-site installation. These housings combine structural integrity with load-rated lifting attachments that comply with recognised rigging standards. The manufacturing process includes precision stamping, robotic welding of lug reinforcements, stress-relief heat treatment, and CNC machining of critical mounting interfaces. With 40 years of motor housing production and a capacity exceeding 5 million units per year, Yufeng supplies lifting-lug housings in IEC and NEMA frame sizes, with custom lug configurations available for specific load requirements and rigging geometries.

Load-rated lifting lugs

Lugs are designed with safety factors of 4:1 or 5:1 based on motor weight. Load ratings are verified through finite element analysis and physical proof-load testing per customer requirements.

Structural integration

Lugs are either stamped integrally with the housing shell or welded with full-penetration joints. Reinforcing gussets are added for high-capacity loads to distribute stress across the housing.

Process compatibility

Lug features are incorporated into the manufacturing sequence without disrupting dimensional accuracy. Post-weld stress relief ensures stability of critical bore and mounting surfaces.

Engineering & design considerations

  • Lug placement: Positioned to align with the housing centre of gravity, minimising tilt during lifting. Offset lugs available for motors with unbalanced loads.
  • Load testing: Proof-load testing can be performed on each lug to 125 % of SWL. Certificates of test are issued upon request.
  • Weld quality: Full-penetration welds with magnetic particle inspection (MPI) available for critical applications.
  • Compatibility: Lug hole diameters and slot widths are designed to accommodate standard shackles, hooks, and eyebolts.

Quality assurance & supply chain

  • First-pass yield > 98 % on lug position and hole dimensions (Cpk ≥ 1.67).
  • Material certificates EN 10204 3.1 and dimensional inspection report per batch.
  • Packaging: anti-rust VCI film + corrugated trays; export wooden crates with ISPM 15 certification.
  • Lead time: 15–20 working days for standard lug configurations; 25–30 days for custom lug designs or special load ratings.
  • PPAP level 3 available for automotive and high-reliability applications.

Application fields

  • Industrial motors: Pumps, compressors, fans, and conveyors — where overhead lifting is required for installation and maintenance in plant environments.
  • Heavy equipment: Mining, construction, and agricultural machinery — where motor replacement must be performed in the field with mobile cranes.
  • Marine and offshore: Motors installed in engine rooms or on deck where lifting points are essential for safe rigging.
  • Power generation: Generator sets and turbine auxiliary motors requiring lifting for periodic inspection and overhaul.

For custom lug configurations, Yufeng provides structural FEA and lifting analysis to verify load distribution and rigging safety. Proof-load testing and certification are available for each lug design.

Frequently asked questions

How are the lifting lugs rated and tested?

Each lug design is analysed using FEA to determine stress distribution and deflection under load. We perform proof-load testing at 125 % of the safe working load (SWL) upon request, with test certificates issued for each unit or batch.

Can the lug position be customised for a specific motor configuration?

Yes. We offer custom lug placement to match the centre of gravity of your motor assembly. We can also provide multiple lifting points for large or heavy motors to ensure stable rigging during handling.

What is the difference between integral and welded lugs?

Integral lugs are stamped as part of the housing shell, offering a cleaner appearance and eliminating weld seams. Welded lugs allow for higher load capacities and can be fabricated from thicker material. Both options are available with full inspection.

Do you provide coating for corrosion protection on the lugs?

All lugs receive the same surface treatment as the housing — zinc phosphate plus e-coat as standard. For harsh environments, we offer powder coating or zinc-rich epoxy primers with polyurethane topcoats.

What documentation is supplied for lifting lug certifications?

We provide material certificates (EN 10204 3.1), dimensional inspection reports, and proof-load test certificates when requested. For special applications, we can supply weld procedure specifications (WPS) and welder qualification records.
